COLONOSCOPY

Screening for Colon Cancer

The colon is also called the large intestine. The goal of colon cancer screening is to find colon polyps (abnormal growths) or colon cancers early. (There is a better chance of curing colon cancer if it is found early). Screening is particularly important for people with a family history of colon cancer. Most colon cancers begin as polyps.

A polyp is an abnormal growth. A scope is used to look for polyps growing in the colon. You should discuss colon cancer screening with your physician.
